John L. Szarek, PhD, of Moosic, speaks at 18thWorld Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology in Kyoto

Dr. Szarek played numerous leadership and educational roles at the event

Scranton, PA (07/26/2018) — John L. Szarek, PhD, of Moosic, professor and director of clinical pharmacology and education director for simulation at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM), recently returned from Japan where he attended the 18thWorld Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (WCP2018) in Kyoto. Dr. Szarek played numerous leadership and educational roles at the event.

He was on the steering committee that organized a preconference satellite symposium, "Educating Scientists and Healthcare Professionals for 21st Century Pharmacology," June 30 and July 1.

Dr. Szarek gave one of the plenary talks at the education satellite conference entitled, "Introducing the Pharmacology Education Project." During the general assembly of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) Education Section, he was elected as a member of the executive committee for 2018-2022.

Dr. Szarek was active during WCP2018 as well:

  • He co-chaired a session with Dr. Simon Maxwell (University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom), entitled, "Introducing the IUPHAR Pharmacology Education Project" on July 2.
  • He was one of the symposium speakers discussing the "Taxonomy and Structure of the Pharmacology Education Project website."
  • Lastly, on July 3 Dr. Szarek presented a talk, "Interprofessional Education (IPE): An Overview and Approaches to IPE in Health Professions Education," as part of a symposium at WCP2018 called, "IPE: Educating a New Generation of Healthcare Professionals to Prescribe Medications Safely and Effectively."
