Scranton, PA (09/21/2021) — The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) invited Michelle Schmude, EdD, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (GCSOM) associate dean for admissions, enrollment management and financial aid & associate professor of medical education, to present at the AAMC Strategies and Resources for Minority Premeds and Applicants virtual fair on Sept. 21.
She served on a panel entitled, "Financing Your Medical Education - Beyond Loans and Scholarships." During the session, Dr. Schmude discussed the Abigail Geisinger Scholars program with medical school admissions officers from the U.S. and Canada, and thousands of aspiring medical students. Joining her to talk about his experiences as an Abigail Geisinger Scholar was Frank Monney, a member of the MD Class of 2024.
The presentation is part of an event the AAMC designed for admissions officers, pre-health advisors and AAMC experts to get information and learn about resources for aspiring physicians who identify as racial and/or ethnic minorities.
"It was an honor to be invited to speak at this conference, which is specifically intended to introduce resources for under-represented in medicine (URM) candidates to admissions officers and undergraduate pre-health advisors. These are the people who have a big impact on the choices medical school candidates make. It was a great opportunity to showcase our unique Scholars program before a large, influential audience," Dr. Schmude said.
The Abigail Geisinger Scholars program allows those accepted to the program to graduate without tuition debt and receive a $2,000 per month stipend. Upon completion of residency training, the recipient become a Geisinger-employed physician in family medicine, internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics or psychiatry.
