Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine faculty publish research
Drs. Schmude, Bannon published in Journal of First-Generation Student Success
Scranton, PA (03/07/2022) — A paper authored by two Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine faculty members and a third-year medical student has been accepted for publication by the Journal of First-Generation Student Success.
The paper, entitled "The Academic Performance of First-Generation-to-College Medical Students as They Transition to Residency," will appear in the April edition.
The authors compared the performance of first-generation-to-college medical school students to that of their continuing-generation peers as assessed by students' successful matches into competitive specialties. Although the results indicate no major differences in the success of the two groups on that measure, the authors recognize the need for additional research to determine the respective contributions of GCSOM in helping both groups of medical students achieve success in their chosen specialties. In addition, further research is needed to assess whether first-generation medical students experience other, unique, challenges. The authors cannot yet explain the gender differences that exist among both cohorts in the transition to residency because female medical students significantly match into Tier 2 and 3 specialties compared to male medical students who match more often into Tier 1 specialties.
The Geisinger Commonwealth authors include Michelle M. Schmude, EdD, MBA, associate dean for admissions, enrollment management and financial aid and an associate professor of medical education, Department of Medical Education; Joseph P. Bannon, MD, FACS, FASCRS program director, Geisinger General Surgery Northeast Residency, and an associate professor of surgery at Geisinger Commonwealth; and Michael Yi, a member of Geisinger Commonwealth's MD Class of 2023.
The Journal of First-Generation Student Success is a publication of National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). The Journal publishes practice articles grounded in research and literature and, reciprocally, research articles that speak to practice.
