Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Student Affairs team to address AAMC conference
Presentations will take place at spring meeting of Northeast Group on Student Affairs in Boston
Scranton, PA (03/11/2019) — Five members of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (GCSOM) student affairs team will travel to Boston to speak at an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) conference. The presentations will take place at the spring meeting of AAMC's Northeast Group on Student Affairs and Organization of Student Representatives (NEGSA/NEOSR) being held April 4-7.
Vicki T. Sapp, Ph.D. director of student engagement, diversity and inclusion and an assistant professor will deliver two workshops. She will present the first workshop, entitled Professional Identity Formation, Cultural Competency: Understanding and Interrupting Microaggressions in Medical School - Education Lessons Learned, together with Amy Kline, associate director of GCSOM's Center for Learning Excellence (CLE). Ms. Kline, associate director and Tanya Morgan, assistant director of the CLE, will join Dr. Sapp to present the second workshop, entitled Professional Identity Formation, Cultural Competency: Make the InVISIBLE visible-- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Communities Lessons Learned.
Julia A. Kolcharno, MA, director of student development, academic advising & career engagement and Linda Learn, MSW, student affairs manager for clinical activities will present a workshop entitled, I'm Almost a Doctor!The workshop focuses on how to use constructive, actionable feedback from career peer mentors, career coaches and faculty to provide students with opportunities to effectively demonstrate their professionalism, motivation, initiative, reliability, integrity and ability to work effectively on a team at residency interviews.
In addition to the workshops, the GCSOM team has also been invited to participate with additional presentations. Amy Kline will facilitate a luncheon roundtable discussion on the subject Enhancing USMLE Step 1 Preparation Through an In-House Step Prep Program. Tanya Morgan will present her poster, Student Wellness at GCSOM -- GCSOM Is Dedicated to Improving the Health and Well-Being of Our Students at the meeting's poster reception on April 5
AAMC's Group on Student Affairs (GSA) represents the interests of medical schools and medical students in the areas of admissions, student affairs, student diversity affairs, student financial assistance and student records. GSA provides communication among GSA representatives with responsibilities in these areas. The GSA advises the AAMC on matters of policy relating to the GSA's areas of interest and expertise and may recommend such policy to the AAMC governance for consideration. GSA activities include project analysis, program development and data-gathering about emerging trends to help the GSA and the AAMC to anticipate and respond effectively to environmental changes as they affect medical education, medical schools, and medical students in the areas of the GSA's interest and expertise.
