Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Vicki T. Sapp to speak at research symposium
Dr. Sapp to address Community-Engaged Research Symposium at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit
Scranton, PA (04/10/2019) — Vicki T. Sapp, Ph.D., director of student engagement, diversity and inclusion and a faculty member at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) has been invited to present at the Community-Engaged Research Symposium: Implementing Strategies for Inclusive Research hosted by Wayne State University and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, both located in Detroit. The symposium will take place on June 17 at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. The symposium focuses on community engagement in health research, particularly cancer and cardiovascular disease. The meeting will provide opportunities for researchers and community members to learn about and discuss the benefits of community-engaged research, as well as its challenges, and strategies for conducting such research successfully. The meeting will also present the opportunity to learn from and network with community stakeholders who have identified relevant research priorities for their communities.
Dr. Sapp will present "Understanding and Interrupting Microaggressions," a session that examines how microaggressions impact targeted people based solely upon their marginalized group membership and provides examples of everyday instances of microaggression. Additionally, Dr. Sapp will review and engage participants in individual self-reflection and group processing discussions.

- Phoenix Matthews, Ph.D., University of Illinois, whose expertise is in engaging LGBTQ communities in smoking cessation research.
- Derek Griffith, Ph.D., of Vanderbilt University, who specializes in increasing the participation of African-American men in chronic disease management research.
- Professor Scout, Ph.D., deputy director of the National LGBT Cancer Project, Boston University School of Public Health, whose expertise is in opportunities and challenges in funding and conducting LGBTQ health research.
- Vicki Johnson-Lawrence, Ph.D., Michigan State University, who specializes in community trauma.
- Katrina Ellis, Ph.D., University of Michigan, with expertise in achieving academic success as a community-engaged researcher.
