"Trauma is Real: Understanding and Interrupting Microaggressions" was delivered to WSU residents, researchers and support staff

Scranton, PA (08/19/2020) — Vicki T. Sapp, PhD, director for student engagement, diversity and inclusion and an assistant professor in Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (GCSOM) Department of Medical Education engaged in virtual training of Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine residents, researchers and support staff on June 29. Rhonda Dailey, MD, director of diversity and inclusion, Office of Community Engaged Research (OCEnR) and a WSU assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health invited Dr. Sapp to deliver the training.

Dr. Sapp's presentation, entitled, "Trauma is Real: Understanding and Interrupting Microaggressions" was delivered to WSU residents, researchers and support staff to provide education about how:

  • Microaggressions impact the mental health of communities;
  • To recognize and identify factors of distress in the face of microaggressions; and
  • To facilitate ways to personally and professionally mitigate microaggressions.

On Aug. 13, Dr. Dailey again invited Dr. Sapp to deliver the virtual training, this time to WSU School of Medicine faculty as part of their professional development.

"I am grateful to Dr. Dailey for the opportunity to engage with Wayne State faculty and learners. The sessions were lively, interactive and, above all, meaningful. I look forward to future collaborations with WSU," Dr. Sapp said.
