Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Dr. Vicki Sapp named to AAMC workgroup

The Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) First Generation Work Group will improve programs and strategies to assist first-generation medical students

Scranton, PA (03/20/2019) — Vicki T. Sapp, Ph.D. director of student engagement, diversity and inclusion and an assistant professor at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) has been invited to serve on the American Association of Medical College's (AAMC) Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) First Generation Work Group. The work group is newly created by the Section on UME and is tasked with improving programs and strategies to assist first-generation students, who often lack mentors and resources to guide and support them throughout their medical education.

The purpose of AAMC's Section on UME of the GEA is to promote excellence in the education of medical students from selection to graduation in order to contribute to the health of the public. The Section develops and improves undergraduate medical education programs; aids the professional development of all teachers of medical students and develops policies at the (local, regional and national level that recognize the fundamental importance of undergraduate medical education.

Dr. Sapp joins the following members of the workgroup:

Alejandra Casillas MD, MSHS, assistant professor of medicine in residence, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine

Jacob M. Altholz, 2d Lt, USAF, MSC, a second-year medical student at the Uniformed Services University, a representative from AAMC's Organization of Student Representatives and a first-generation student himself.

April O. Buchanan, MD, pediatrician and assistant dean for academic affairs at South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville.

Lisa Coplit, MD, internist and associate dean for faculty development at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University.

Christopher (Chris) McKnight, staff member at AAMC and program specialist for the Medical Education division.

Toshi Uchida, MD, internist and director of clinical skills education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
